Jette Clover was born and raised in Copenhagen, Denmark, but she has lived and worked for many years in USA and the Netherlands. Since 2005 she has been living in Belgium. Her formal education is in journalism and art history. She has worked on a daily newspaper in Copenhagen, operated an art gallery in Los Angeles, California and later worked as curator at the Dutch Textile Museum for 10 years, where she organized the very first European Art Quilt exhibition in 1997. She has exhibited widely in USA, Europe, Australia and in 2015 she won the prestigious Quilt Japan prize, teaching and exhibiting while traveling in Japan. She is a sought after teacher for workshops and masterclasses, and she has acted as juror for many international art quilt exhibitions. Jette has been a member of the European group QuiltArt since 2000, and she is currently serving on the board of the international organisation SAQA (Studio Art Quilt Association).
Writing is related to the inherent human desire to make marks. These marks can be familiar signs, such as numbers and letters, personal symbols, or simple doodles. The workshop will explore language as a means of visual communication. Text and writing will be used as key elements of design and the relationship between words, meaning, and form will be explored, focusing on process and composition. Just as you learn words to speak a language, you need to know something about visual language and how to treat lines, shapes, colors, and textures.
The artist plays with words, loving their shapes and sounds, and their ability to convey meaning.
Due to her journalistic training, she has always been passionate about letters and languages. She is interested in the layers and fragments of communication that can be seen in cities, in posters, advertisements, and graffiti. Her recent research focuses on the intimacy of handwriting and ancient signs and symbols.
Through exercises with paper and fabric, she will experiment with collage constructions, applying different surface design techniques such as painting, printing, oxidation, bleaching, stenciling, sanding, overpainting, and transfers, combining cotton, linen, or gauze fabrics with papers. Hand- stitching adds another layer of complexity, like a slow and intimate writing process.
The workshop will last 3 days / 8 hours per day, including lunch, and will be taught in English.
